Banks will issue ATM cards so eligible investors can withdraw the
accrued amount every three months, and private banks can request certificates from participating banks on behalf of their customers, Aswat Masriya quoted Ramez as saying. Certificate holders are eligible to apply for loans from issuant banks for up to 90 percent of their certificate value.

But questions surround the viability of this new method of financing a national project on this scale, as well as the feasibility of the expected dramatic rise in canal revenue.

The project was lauded as a national achievement, on par with the construction of Aswan’s High Dam. In an essay typical of the genre, Ahmed al-Naggar, head of government think tank the Al-Ahram Center, described the canal expansion as a “giant national project that is a main gateway for Egypt’s economic boom to summon the savings capacity of the great people of Egypt, at home and abroad, to build the future, destiny and path for their country with the money, brains and achievements of the people.”

At first, officials said the canal would be financed through an initial public offering, floating shares on the Egyptian Stock Exchange. Then, on August 14, Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb announced the canal would be funded by five-year investment certificates through the four main state-owned banks: Banque Misr, the National Bank of Egypt, Banque du Caire and Suez Canal Bank.

Ramez said that the lower priced certificates are meant to “encourage every segment of society to contribute to the project,” adding that banks will send representatives to schools in a bid to attract students. He added that authorities are expecting a lot of demand that should easily cover the total costs of the project. If not, participating banks will come together and grant a collective loan to the government.

Overall, the expansion and development plans are expected to increase canal revenues to US$13.5 billion by 2023, compared to $5.3 billion last year, Ramez said on Sunday.

he opening phase in a larger plan to develop the canal region into a hub for global trade, industry and logistics, the canal extension is to involve dry digging a new waterway 35 kilometers long, as well as 37 kilometers of expanding and deepening the existing canal, for a total of 72 kilometers.

In line with public fundraising efforts such as the Tahya Masr fund, officials announced that the digging, with an estimated cost of around LE60 billion, would be funded by public contributions. The canal expansion will allow two-way traffic and ease bottlenecks along the canal, cutting transit time and allowing larger ships to traverse the waterway.

aranteed by the Ministry of Finance, the values of the non-tradable certificates range from LE10 to LE100 to LE1,000 and carry an interest rate of 12 percent. For certificates of LE1,000 and above, the interest will be distributed every three months, while for the lower brackets, the accrued interest will be distributed cumulatively at the end of a predetermined 5-year maturity period, according to the Aswat Masriya news portal.

After promising that he had a “surprise” for the Egyptian people, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi unveiled a plan to expand the Suez Canal during a televised speech on August 5.

A specific date has not been set, but the certificates will be available to the public after a presidential decree is passed to ratify a law drafted by the Cabinet, which allows the Suez Canal Authority to issue certificates.

The Central Bank has already printed six million certificates, according to Central Bank Governor Hesham Ramez, who spoke about the details of the financing scheme at a press conference on Sunday. Egyptians living abroad will be able to buy certificates from corresponding local banks once they are announced on the CBE’s website.

After deciding that the financing needs of the Suez Canal development project will be pooled from investment certificates made available to the public, authorities have announced that Egyptian pound-denominated certificates will be available locally and abroad.

Dollar-denominated certificates are still under discussion, while restricting the purchase of the Suez Canal Investment Certificates to Egyptian individuals and legal entities reflects the government’s strong desire to create and preserve a national identity for the mega-scale project.

“Doubling the number of vessels passing through the Suez Canal is primarily linked to the global trade movement, which increases by 2-3% in regular periods, excluding periods of recession,” he said. “This raises concerns about the achievement of the desired figures and revenues.” Funding the project through investment certificates is also problematic, especially with the high interest they offer, he added.

“The financial return on investment certificates will be funded from the profits of the Suez Canal, until the new canal achieves financial surpluses,” Sheneti said. “Consequently, there is a problem with economic feasibility that will affect the net income of the Suez Canal allocated to cover the deficit and finance part of the state’s general budget.”

However, several state-run and independent media outlets celebrated the appearance of water as a sign of progress, while official statements presented the use of dredges as a triumph.

“The introduction of dredges to the construction site marks the start of a new stage in the project,” said Mohab Mamish, chairman of the Suez Canal Authority. “The fact that this stage started only 24 days after the beginning of the project is an achievement in itself.”

Revenue

Economic concerns relating to technical challenges have been voiced by experts. Economist Omar al-Sheneti said he was skeptical about the amount of revenue that the project is expected to generate, and questioned the official argument that digging a new canal would increase the number of vessels passing through it.

“The cost of drilling underwater will exceed 10 times the cost of drilling in dry lands,” said engineering professor Haitham Awad. The proximity of the drilling site to the original canal played a major role in creating the problem, he added. “The drilling site chosen was 400 meters from the Suez Canal, but it would have been better to choose a site between 8 and 10 kilometers from the old canal.”

Iman Fathi, an expert at the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources, said the appearance of underground water was due to the absence of necessary research that should precede implementation. “There were not enough studies conducted on the characteristics of the soil in the construction sites,” she said. This will not only drastically increase costs, but also make timely completion impossible, she added.

The Guardian newspaper ran an article about thousands of Egyptians being evicted without compensation to make way for the new canal. Patrick Kingsley and Manu Abdo reported that in the villages of Qantara and Abtal, 1,500 homes were destroyed and another 5,000 are threatened.

“Soldiers told evicted villagers they had no right to live on the land as it technically had always belonged to the army,” they wrote. “Some of those who argued back were arrested.”

Implementation

The project is seen by some as a national achievement, and by others as an uncalculated adventure. A major implementation challenge has already emerged with the appearance of underground water during the drilling process. This is expected to greatly increase costs, especially in light of the one-year deadline set by the president, which the army has promised to stick to.

On Sept. 4, investment certificates aimed at funding the Suez Canal development project were available for purchase at Egypt’s four public banks. By the end of the day, the total amount paid had reached 6 billion Egyptian pounds ($839 million), according to Hesham Ramez, governor of the central bank.

He attributed the demand to “the patriotism of Egyptians who are keen on contributing to such an enormous national project,” as well as the relatively high interest provided by the certificates. “Almost 90% of the buyers are individuals and not corporations,” he said. The turnout led to banks extending their working hours.

However, Investment Minister Ashraf Salman said prior to the issuing of the certificates that he expected the money raised to cover the total cost of digging the new canal, which is 60 billion Egyptian pounds.

Armageddon

بواسطة Unknown بتاريخ الخميس، 14 أغسطس 2014 | 7:22 م

1. Armageddon

Ah, Michael Bay, you probably could have filled this entire list. I don't hate you like the rest of the Internet, for I never knew of the Transformers until you came along, so what little childhood I had has remained unmolested by you, but watch what you're doing with TMNT. Armageddon is surely your crowning glory, for the sheer audacity of, in one scene and a couple of lines of dialogue, suggesting it would be easier to train drillers to be astronauts than astronauts to be drillers. The longest Aerosmith video in history, Armageddon sees Bruce Willis and his rag-tag team of regular, blue-collar guys

(including Steve Buscemi, Michael Clarke Duncan, Owen Wilson and Ben Affleck) sent into space to blow up a meteor the size of Texas, by drilling into it 800 feet. None of the physics in this movie makes sense, the script is beyond cringey at times and there are several moments when all of humanity is put at risk for no real reason. William Fichtner and Peter Stormare, together 8 years before season 2 of Prison Break, are great as the pilot and Russian cosmonaut encountered along the way, but Liv Tyler is too lip-quiveringly vapid to do anything but simper and annoy. Still, I will happily watch this movie given enough time (twice this year so far) and I'd happily and proudly put it in my favourite 20 films.

Final Destination Series

2. Final Destination Series

Of all the seemingly endless horror franchises, why is this my favourite? Well it can't be Halloween, as I've only seen the first one, A Nightmare on Elm Streetgets far too campy and ridiculous after part 1 and I've unforgivably never seen any of the Friday the 13th saga. The Scream series is good but relies too much on twist endings, and the Saws are a tad too gory for my liking, but there's something

about Final Destination that makes me not care that they're essentially making the same film over and over again, with only a moderate twist each time. It's also probably because there's no actual killer stalking the barely-characterised victims, it's merely death himself. The first film occasionally portrayed this entity as a self-aware blue liquid, and actually caused at least one of the deaths, but later films did away with this completely. Part 2 holds a special place in my heart purely for the death-by-fence shot, of which a screenshot was my desktop background for some time.

Deep Blue Sea

4. Deep Blue Sea

Essentially Jurassic Park with sharks instead of dinosaurs (Jurassic Shark?), a higher tollerance for blood and Saffron Burrows instead of Richard Attenborough, this movie has no real reason to be watched more than once, but a decent C-list cast (if you're feeling generous) and some inventive

deaths, considering they're mostly all by sharks, makes this genuinely entertaining. Putting Samuel L. Jackson in any film automatically makes it better, as is the case with Michael Rapaport and, bizarelly, LL Cool J, though Thomas Jane and the aforementionned Burrows do their best to sink this story of genetically modified, super-intelligent, 8,000 pound makos.

Daylight

3. Daylight

Holding the position of my first ever favoruite movie (I got into films late) this Stallone classic sees his former paramedic going in alone to save the survivors of a collapsed New York tunnel. The group includes the typical microcosm of society you'd never find in an actual collapse; the tunnel employee

with useful knowledge, a headstrong, capable, skinny yet inexplicably single girl for our hero to fall for, the elderly couple with their beloved dog, as well as a famous adrenaline junkie (Viggo Mortenson) and a bus-load of convicted felons for good measure. Stallone's name alone, Kit Latura, should have been enough to make this a direct-to-video Van Damme film, but I've loved it's lunacy and predictability since before I knew who Sly was.

Con Air

Last week I took a look at some of the movies of which the general consensus is they are classics, but I don't necessarily agree. As promised, this week here's the flip side to that coin, the films that I love, but others may think I'm a little stupid for doing so. These are basically guilty pleasures that I really should know better than to enjoy, but that doesn't mean watching them can't stick a goofy grin on my face and make me forget whatever other crap is invading my life.

I'd argue with many people that this isn't actually a bad film, it's just highly implausible and tremendous fun, when a band of some of the most dangerous criminals in the world, led by John Malkovich's Cyrus 'The Virus' Grissom, take over the plane transporting them to a new prison. Nic Cage is our justifiably law-breaking Navy seal hero catching a ride home
with his ridiculous hair, and John Cusack the only man on the ground who believes in him
. The cast is as impressively diverse as the film (Ving Rhames, Danny Trejo, Mykelti Williamson, Dave Chapelle, M. C. Gainey, Colm Meaney) and Steve Buscemi plays a cannibalistic paedophile. Who (SPOILER) gets away. As in, he's free. In a casino, gambling, in public. We're told he once drove around wearing a young girl's head as a hat. Earlier in the film, he has tea with a little girl playing with a doll, and later we see a smashed tea cup, the girl nowhere to be found. So, presumably he killed her, possibly eating her? This is the oddest scene to put into an action film, especially when you consider Buscemi's Garland Greene isn't in the top 3 antagonists! And did I mention he gets away? And no-one seems to be looking for him?

Story of the movie avatar

Watching "Avatar," I felt sort of the same as when I saw "Star Wars" in 1977. That was another movie I walked into with uncertain expectations. James Cameron's film has been the subject of relentlessly dubious advance buzz, just as his "Titanic" was. Once again, he has silenced the doubters by simply delivering an extraordinary film. There is still at least one man in Hollywood who knows how to spend $250 million, or was it $300 million, wisely.

"Avatar" is not simply a sensational entertainment, although it is that. It's a technical breakthrough. It has a flat-out Green and anti-war message. It is predestined to launch a cult. It contains such visual detailing that it would reward repeating viewings. It invents a new language, Na'vi, as "Lord of the Rings" did, although mercifully I doubt this one can be spoken by humans, even teenage humans. It creates new movie stars. It is an Event, one of those films you feel you must see to keep up with the conversation.

The story, set in the year 2154, involves a mission by U. S. Armed Forces to an earth-sized moon in orbit around a massive star. This new world, Pandora, is a rich source of a mineral Earth desperately needs. Pandora represents not even a remote threat to Earth, but we nevertheless send in ex-military mercenaries to attack and conquer them. Gung-ho warriors employ machine guns and pilot armored hover ships on bombing runs. You are free to find this an allegory about contemporary politics. Cameron obviously does.

Pandora harbors a planetary forest inhabited peacefully by the Na'vi, a blue-skinned, golden-eyed race of slender giants, each one perhaps 12 feet tall. The atmosphere is not breathable by humans, and the landscape makes us pygmies. To venture out of our landing craft, we use avatars--Na'vi lookalikes grown organically and mind-controlled by humans who remain wired up in a trance-like state on the ship. While acting as avatars, they see, fear, taste and feel like Na'vi, and have all the same physical adeptness.

This last quality is liberating for the hero, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), who is a paraplegic. He's been recruited because he's a genetic match for a dead identical twin, who an expensive avatar was created for. In avatar state he can walk again, and as his payment for this duty he will be given a very expensive operation to restore movement to his legs. In theory he's in no danger, because if his avatar is destroyed, his human form remains untouched. In theory.

On Pandora, Jake begins as a good soldier and then goes native after his life is saved by the lithe and brave Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). He finds it is indeed true, as the aggressive Col. Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang) briefed them, that nearly every species of life here wants him for lunch. (Avatars are not be made of Na'vi flesh, but try explaining that to a charging 30-ton rhino with a snout like a hammerhead shark).

The Na'vi survive on this planet by knowing it well, living in harmony with nature, and being wise about the creatures they share with. In this and countless other ways they resemble Native Americans. Like them, they tame another species to carry them around--not horses, but graceful flying dragon-like creatures. The scene involving Jake capturing and taming one of these great beasts is one of the film's greats sequences.

Like "Star Wars" and "LOTR," "Avatar" employs a new generation of special effects. Cameron said it would, and many doubted him. It does. Pandora is very largely CGI. The Na'vi are embodied through motion capture techniques, convincingly. They look like specific, persuasive individuals, yet sidestep the eerie Uncanny Valley effect. And Cameron and his artists succeed at the difficult challenge of making Neytiri a blue-skinned giantess with golden eyes and a long, supple tail, and yet--I'll be damned. Sexy.

At 163 minutes, the film doesn't feel too long. It contains so much. The human stories. The Na'vi stories, for the Na'vi are also developed as individuals. The complexity of the planet, which harbors a global secret. The ultimate warfare, with Jake joining the resistance against his former comrades. Small graceful details like a floating creature that looks like a cross between a blowing dandelion seed and a drifting jellyfish, and embodies goodness. Or astonishing floating cloud-islands.

I've complained that many recent films abandon story telling in their third acts and go for wall-to-wall action. Cameron essentially does that here, but has invested well in establishing his characters so that it matters what they do in battle and how they do it. There are issues at stake greater than simply which side wins.

Cameron promised he'd unveil the next generation of 3-D in "Avatar." I'm a notorious skeptic about this process, a needless distraction from the perfect realism of movies in 2-D. Cameron's iteration is the best I've seen -- and more importantly, one of the most carefully-employed. The film never uses 3-D simply because it has it, and doesn't promiscuously violate the fourth wall. He also seems quite aware of 3-D's weakness for dimming the picture, and even with a film set largely in interiors and a rain forest, there's sufficient light. I saw the film in 3-D on a good screen at the AMC River East and was impressed. I might be awesome in True IMAX. Good luck in getting a ticket before February.

It takes a hell of a lot of nerve for a man to stand up at the Oscarcast and proclaim himself King of the World. James Cameron just got re-elected.

Google’s former CEO Eric Schmidt writes a guide “Converting to Android from iPhone”

Steve Cook succeeded in dominating the mobile market with iPhone. It was a new trend. However, iPhone became a status symbol with time. It is said without a doubt that iPhone offers flawless UI and lagfree usage. Apple’s App Store is one of world’s biggest app markets. However, over past few years, Android is giving iPhone a tough competition.
Eric Schmidt has posted a guide on his Google+ ID for those who want to make the switch. According to Eric Schmidt, “80% of the world, in the latest surveys, agrees on Android”. This statement seems quite true, as I see more of my friends converting from iPhone to Android everyday. Eric Schmidt says “Many of my iPhone friends are converting to Android”. Android phones are much better than iPhone in terms of specs and display. They are faster and provide better viewing experience. Gaming is more fun. On top of all, Android is way more flexible than iPhone. In Android, all apps are linked to each other. You can open and edit same file in number of apps by opening from same place. In iPhone, you have to open a separate app for every thing you do.

Many people do not switch to Android only because of their love for Apple. They do not like to give Android even a try. I have used both. iPhone is made for those who know nothing about phones. In a survey, it’s shown that if an Android smartphone, iPhone, Blackberry mobile and Windows mobile are given to a person who has never used a mobile, and he is asked to dial a number; He will do it fastest on iPhone! Well, its hundred percent true. But what is the point of this. We all have been using smartphones since we were kids. I found Android little difficult at start, but as i starting understanding it, I find iPhone as a piece of junk. There are so many limitations on iPhone. I would never switch back to iPhone now.

Those who have switched to Android from iPhone must know how difficult it is to transfer data from iPhone. Especially, the music in itunes. I went mad because I could not find a way to do so. In Android, I can freely copy data in and out of mobile’s memory – without having to pass through boring synchronization process.

Ondes Visibles: What if the Electrosmog was Visible?

The Web of Things cries for wireless communication! As a consequence, as it is being deployed out there it contributes to a phenomena called electrosmog, understand a cloud of electromagnetic waves that increasingly surrounds us (and the exact effect of that cloud on us is still in the middle of many debates…).

The fascinating part about this cloud is that much like our electricity consumption, we can’t really see it or feel it (well except for electro-sensitive people who say they can). Back in 2007, we started working on a project to make electricity visible the Web way (Energie Visible!), hence trying to make electromagnetic fields visible sounded like a fun challenge.

Hardware of Ondes Visibles!
Ondes Visibles! is an Android + Arduino application that I developed to help people experimenting with and raising their awareness of electromagnetic fields (EMFs). It features tutorials giving you the very basics of EMFs as well as interactive experiments for low (LF) and high (HF) frequencies using home-made sensors. Basically, we plug an LF and HF sensor to an Arduino board. Then, using a USB bridge, we route the measurements to pretty much any Android mobile phone through a USB wire (using the great Microbridge library). and visualize the data in graphs.

Android and the Web of Things: NFC, EPC, QR and Arduino

As hinted by Vlad on his last post, mobile phones and more specifically Android phones, are great actors of the Web of Things. The openness of the Android platform and the possibility of extending it both in hardware and software terms make it an ideal candidate for a universal Web of Things gateway!

Let me share a hands-on illustration of this here. The video and slide-deck you’ll find below were taken at the last Google Dev Fest in Zurich. There, I was showing how Android phones can be very easily used to decode 1D barcodes, QR-codes (using zxing ) and NFC-tags (using the Android SDK native NFC support) from your custom apps. Illustrating these concepts with the FreezeMe app.

But that’s not it. Android also let’s you prototype the integration of all kinds of devices and accessories through the great and famous Arduino platform. The talk illustrates this using two techniques:

The first being an “abuse” of the ADB (Android Debug Bridge) that some smart dudes used as a communication channel to the external world. This gives you a super simple and cheap way of communicating with many Arduinos (like the Uno) from any Android >1.5 mobile phone. The example is based on the ~25$ Circuits@home USB Host Shield (they do ship to Europe as well, I tested it!) as well as the Android Microbridge Project. Note: make sure you check: if you decide to use the Microbridge project.
The second being Google’s reaction to the ADB “abuse”. It could have been to patch it to prevent people from using the ADB for extensions but it rather was a nice reaction where Google actually decided to standardize the process of creating (prototypes of) Android accessories in a system called the ADK (Accessory Development Kit), early basis of the Android @ Home project and supported by Arduino devices like the Mega ADK. Note: make sure you check: if you decide to use the ADK.
The tutorial also contains dozens of links, code samples, and troubleshooting notes. Enjoy the video and the slides below, comments are welcomed!

Arduino + Processing + Android = Tellart

As make magazine reports, our friends from Tellart just released a fabulous tutorial for a toolkit and code samples to build prototypes that bind any android device with Arduinos. You’ll definitely find some great examples to get started within the 25 samples included, so we encourage you to give it a try!

This week we’re happy to update that list of toolkits with a suite of materials focused on connecting any Android device (mobile or tablet) with the Arduino ADK microcontroller, with the Processing language to tie them together. The materials – a combination of “how-to” installation guides, working Arduino and Processing sample code, and educational exercises – walk through the set-up process and provide some basic starters for making a functional application or game. The 25 samples include modules such as the code you need to create a “color picker” on the Android and have it drive the color of an LED attached to the Arduino, or to send an RFID number from a scanner to the phone, or to create a basic oscilloscope by graphing the output of a potentiometer on the Android screen. It’s tailored to get beginners going, or to give more experienced coders a quick leg up in using the three (Android, Processing, and Arduino) together.

NFC Stands for Nobody F*** Cares, does it?

I had plans on writing a post about NFC & (home) automation a long while ago but the post “NFC stands for Nobody F*** Cares” definitely gave me the spark I needed to sit down and start writing.

Let me first start with a little trip back at the core of the Web of Things‘ idea: the Internet of Things stands for the network layer, where all smart things out there should be connected using IP protocols to facilitate interoperability. Similarly, the Web of Things advocates using Web blueprints such as REST and it’s implementation in HTTP, at the very least as a protocol for controlling devices (a typical stateless task).

So, let’s assume all devices in my home were offering a REST interface (which, isn’t far off reality in my case), either directly, or through a smart gateway. Then, to reach home automation I could probably setup a very smart middleware that “thinks for its users” and accommodate their environment to the current context. One of these systems that ends up turning off the light when you need it the most, ensuring that the heating suddenly turns on when you reach the “NaN” temperature of 35 degrees Celsius (it is Switzerland after all!) and that the window blinds go down at Sunset (because of course developers do work 9-5 all year long). The same type of system that plays the Beatles’ “Something” when coming home right after your girlfriend dumped you ;-)

Or you could go “the human in the center” way, where everything can be configured by using a central interface issuing REST requests all over the place. An interface that upgrades you as the commander of the Enterprise while, all you wanted was to come home, grab an iced-tea and read the latest Internet buzz!

Well, I think there is a world in-between and NFC, which apparently, no-one cares about might be the most straightforward answer, no programming involved!
Let’s go back to my home where the radio system (a Squeezebox), the alarm clock (a Chumby or an app on my phone), some of the lamps (plugged to a Plogg smart meter) and the TV (plugged to a Raspberry PI running Raspberrymc) feature a RESTful Web interface. My phone, a Galaxy Nexus, offers an NFC reader. Then, all I needed to do to setup my own home “automation” system was to download an Android “tasker” app, purchase some tags and off we go. The NFC Task Launcher app, like a number of others, let’s you program reactions when a tag is read, mainly phone-related reactions: turn off the the ring-tone, disconnect from WiFi, call a URL, launch a specific app, Wait, call a URL? But didn’t we say most of my home appliances have a REST interface? REST, URL? Got it?

Here is a typical day in the life of Dom: Dom wakes up takes his phone and throws it in the bucket below, Dom’s phone then connects to the WiFi, syncs the daily calendar of a busy CTO, turns on the Squeezebox to Frequence3 (a rather pop oriented Web radio, perfect for morning push-ups!).

WoT eBay Collections Series Launch: EMF Smog Box

And so it’s time for the second instalment of our Internet of Things Collections blog series for eBay: the EMF Smog Box!

This episode is basically a deep-dive into one of my pet projects we released a little while ago: the Ondes Visible project.

The basic concept of this project is quite simple: making electro magnetic fields (aka EMFs) visible! EMFs surround us day and night. Some are generated by natural elements such as the Sun or the stars, others however are created by humans – mostly through the use of wireless technologies.

EMFs are invisible but scientists are not yet sure of the impact they have on our health, sleep patterns, moods, etc. especially when considering high-frequency fields (see for instance the results of the Interphone study, one of the biggest of its genre). So, visualising these fields is the first step towards awareness; plus it’s quite fun!

The project is composed of three main building blocks:

- An Arduino Uno or more recent controlling two EMF sensors: one for low-frequency fields (< 30 KHz) one for high-frequency fields (> 30 kHz)

- An Android phone to make sense of the sensor data and visualise it

- The Ondes Visible open-source app to learn more about what you are observing as well as to graph the data

‘Receipe’ time…

Again, all the ingredients you need can be found in the EVRYTHNG’s eBay Collections then simply follow the following steps and you should be good to go!

- Step One: building the sensors.

The EMF smog box project can sense two big families of EMFs: low-frequency and high-frequency fields. Examples of low-frequency fields are those generated by electric appliances, e.g. your alarm clock or a lamp.

Sensing them is easy and all you need is a wire and a resitor. Simply solder them together and you are good to go for sensing low-frequency fields (< 30 kHz).

Interestingly enough, low-frequency fields are also far less mysterious in terms of their impact on our health (tried putting your fingers in the power socket anyone? well don’t!).

Sensing high-frequency is much more interesting because those are harder to detect, generated by any modern wireless devices and their impact on our health still generates some controversies…

To build the high-frequency sensor we’ll need a LT5534 RF Power Detector and to solder it onto a protoype board. Unfortunately this component is only available as an SMD (Surface-Mount Device) which means it’s really small and challenging to solder. Make sure you order at least two of them just in case! A nice tutorial on this particular complex step is available here.

- Step Two: connecting the sensors to the Arduino

LG G3 first on postpaid from Globe Telecom

Proving its undisputed leadership in the consumer postpaid segment, Globe Telecom once again became the first PH telco to offer the newest LG G3 with its suite of fully-customizable

postpaid plans, further expanding its device portfolio and bringing to life the speed of its modern network with more pervasive 3G and 4G HSPA+ coverage.
The new LG G3 is available at Plan 1799 with P4,800 cashout, where subscribers get GoSURF999 for 5GB of consumable mobile Internet, free calls and texts to all networks, free Gadget Care coverage for one month, and free six-month access to Spotify Premium, allowing users to stream and listen to over 30 million songs on mobile.

With a Spotify Premium account, users can enjoy ad-free listening experience, play any song on-demand, listen to the highest audio quality, and download music and listen even on offline mode.

"As the leader in postpaid and preferred telco partner of the world's leading device manufacturers such as LG Electronics, we are excited to offer the LG G3 as part of our extensive device portfolio. With our brand new network, customers can maximize the features of LG G3 and enjoy sharing fast and living fast," said Raul Macatangay, Vice President for Postpaid Business and Devices at Globe.

Globe recently announced that its network already has 100% 3G coverage nationwide, and by end-September 2014, 100 percent 4G HSPA+ footprint, enabling faster and more seamless mobile browsing and quality call and text services. LG's latest flagship smartphone takes pride in three core technologies—the sleek design, advanced display, and high- quality camera—providing a seamless yet "simple" user experience. The new Floating Arc shape makes the sides
slimmer, allowing easy, one-hand control. The unit has been made more lightweight, too, for more carrying convenience. LG's strong contender for 2014's "King of Android", the LG G3 also introduces Quad HD (with 538ppi pixel density), which produces sharper and more vivid images, four times than Full HD displays. The 5.5-inch display allows for better viewing at a screen ratio of 76.4 percent.

The 13-megapixel camera includes the smartphone's first Laser Auto Focus for fast and accurate auto-focusing, Optical Image Stabilization Plus (OIS+) for clear photos despite shaky handling and low-light settings, and the Dual LED Flash for vibrant images and balanced colors.

More smart features like the Smart Keyboard (provides keyboard customization for user convenience), Smart Notice (gives suggestions based on user behavior), and Smart Security (offers enhanced security features like the Knock Code and Content Lock) have also been added to the new LG smartphone powerhouse.

Globe Tattoo Line Only Postpaid Plan as low as P199 per month

I checked this particular Globe Business Center in Alabang Town Center and I’m surprised by this newest offer for Tattoo Postpaid.
From P299, their lowest Postpaid plan became lower at P199 per month which has 50 hours of mobile surfing. When I asked one of the Globe staff there, he/she said that it is only a 3G sim (as evident that it can do speeds up to 12 mbps compare to LTE which can do speeds up to 42 mbps)

In case you didn’t know, you can use this sim-only plan for your smartphone, tablet or your mobile wifi just by knowing it’s settings. This plan is a-ok for those who only spend less internet hours per month but those sites or apps that are too heavy for MB-based consumable mobile data plan like Youtube and Instagram (based on my own experience). You only need 1 valid ID for the application.

In the few other Globe branches that I checked, I’m not sure of this moment if this offer is only available at their ATC branch.

Cherry Mobile Pulse Unboxing by screenshots

Through a status post in their Facebook page recently, Cherry Mobile in a way made it clear that their new online video channel is official which they uploaded the unboxing of the most affordable octa-core so far, the Cherry Mobile Pulse.

As I did to my other posts, I’ll share the unboxing in screenshot fashion (in case you have difficulties on watching the video esp. on mobile).  Like it was in the 3D render version, there is really a circular home button that like from iPhone. The package has the phone, earphones, wall charger, user manual and USB cable. After the hands in the video peeled off the plastic sheet with some of the Pulse’s specs, it is not clear if there’s already a pre-installed screen protector on it.

Based on the video, good thing that it doesn’t have the Start lock screen and it looks like stock Android Kitkat based on the app drawer and the camera UI. In gaming, they played the brand’s homegrown game, Manila Rush.

Based on the status post, there’s still no announcement on the unit’s availability.

Extra: The Cherry Mobile Pulse has 2,000 maH removable battery
